Stigma, Syndemics and Sex (S3) study

About S3-Plus study

S3-Plus study is led by Dr. Aleena Sebastian from the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, in collaboration with Centre for Sexuality and Health Research and Policy (C-SHaRP), Sahodaran and Thozhi in Tamil Nadu. It is funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).


This study is being conducted among those who identify themselves as MSM or transgender women (TGW) and reside in Chennai city or Tamil Nadu. These online surveys will help us to understand the stressors experienced by you due to your sexual or gender minority status and due to COVID-19. It will also help us to understand the impact of these stressors on HIV risks and access to healthcare services.


S3-Plus study is an extension of the DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance funded study called ‘Stigma, Syndemics and Sex’ (S3) led by Dr. Venkatesan Chakrapani, MD, PhD (C-SHaRP, Chennai).

  • S3-Plus study - Data Collection

    S3-Plus study is conducted among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Chennai city or Tamil Nadu in collaboration with Centre for Sexuality and Health Research and Policy (C-SHaRP) and community-based organisations: Sahodaran and Thozhi in Chennai.

    Longitudinal survey: This longitudinal study will collect data from participants recruited offline and online. S3-Plus study is an extension of the DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance funded study called ‘Stigma, Syndemics and Sex’ (S3). Stratified random sampling was used to select ‘S3’ study participants registered in community-based organisations. A convenience sample of eligible participants were recruited through the study website. For S3-Plus study, in addition to the existing cohort, new participants who meet the eligibility criteria will be considered.

  • Ethics

    Study participation (offline and online) is completely voluntary and confidential. Surveys will be conducted among eligible participants after obtaining informed consent from the participants (e-consent for online participants). The information obtained from participants will remain anonymous and no identifying information will be revealed in publications. Only the group-level (aggregate) data will be provided in publications.
